Here’s a snapshot of some of the reports* on schools we’ve received from the public recently, so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we’re picking up: an “untouchable” principal on Gauteng’s East Rand, a teacher with a dodgy past at a school near Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal who seems to be pilfering computers, and total meltdown of affairs at a school in the Cape Winelands District.

Dodgy teacher could be stealing computers

“There is a teacher at *** school near Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal. Since he started working there computers and some equipment belonging to the school were stolen and parents are suspecting him; he was once arrested for corruption, Please CW investigate him.

Funds stolen at Cape Winelands school

“I would like to bring to your attention possible corruption and mismanagement, as well as theft, of schools funds at **** secondary school (Cape Winelands district, Western Cape). I would be appreciated if you could take note of the following grievance and investigate because of the following reasons: The school has NO deposit book; Audited monthly and yearly financial statements could not be presented to parents and teachers for the last 5 years; Unauthorized cheques are issued to employees; in 2011 a vehicle (VW Combi) was sold by the SGB for R16 000,00. The money has NEVER been deposited; Tuck shop monies and petty cash are mismanaged. The money is never deposited; Fundraising efforts by teacher: the money is never deposited; Unauthorized purchases on the schools account at various shops. Personal items are bought by teachers; Reports of big donations which were received could not be delivered; Nepotistic allocation of contract and SGB posts are the order of the day; The composition of the SGB is unconstitutional as of August 2012; Regular misuse of school infrastructure (telephone and internet). Online purchases are often seen.”

Fees demanded in ‘no fees’ school

“The principal of *** High school (in Pietermaritzburg) manipulated parents to pay school fees yet the school belongs to no pay school. He uses strategies to convince parents to pay yet the community are needy. Children from this school are shouted in front of other learners for not paying the fees which is embarrassing. Please help this poor community to enjoy their benefits and I am sure that you can get more of the wrong things he does in your investigation.”

‘Untouchable’ principal on Gauteng’s East Rand

“I need you to help me with this monster of corruption … at our school on the East Rand, where the principal is the only person who has full access and password for the online banking of the school account.  There were investigations in January but the principal and His PA was not suspended, my question is why is the Principal so untouchable, is because he is the card carrying member of the ANC or because his friends and family are in the Department of Education? I want to know why was he transferred from *** school to *** High School. The Principal stood up in an SGB meeting and said in an aggressive tone he is the accounting officer and the SGB is not going to micro manage Him. Our Treasurer **** ***  has been begging for bank statement from January to date as she does not have the password for the online baking, the Principal pays salaries on his own, the treasurer does not know what is going on. The treasurer uncovered fraud that was committed by the bookkeeper who is also the principal’s PA.”
