Our work is making an impact

Our ongoing work against corruption in three separate cases has been reported in several newspapers – a clear indication that we are making an impact.

Corruption Watch’s recent report on bribery hotspots specifically involving the JMPD has prompted the police force into taking action. According to newspaper reports, an undercover police agent driving an expensive car set himself up as a tempting target for corrupt police officials.

The agent reportedly placed an empty beer bottle in plain sight of police officers, four of whom were unable to resist the opportunity.

They allegedly asked for a hefty bribe from the driver, who paid up once he had negotiated the original demand down to R4 400, from R8 000. Once the four officers had pocketed the cash, another police team swooped in and arrested them. The four have appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court and were given bail, two of R5 000 and two of R3 000.

Corruption Watch has also made the news with regard to its Constitutional Court appearance last week – the organisation is a friend of the court in the R10-billion tender case of losing bidder Allpay against the South African Social Security Agency and the winning bidder of the tender, Cash Paymaster Services.

Finally, our probe into the Mpumalanga Health Department's decision to award, without putting it out to tender, a multimillion-rand contract to circumcise 260 000 boys and men in the province, again made the pages of the Sunday Independent over the weekend.

Initially the newspaper reported on the investigation, but has now revealed that health minister Aaron Motsoaledi is getting involved, and has asked the provincial health department for an explanation.
