Minister of Higher Education and Training Nobuhle Nkabane has called for the nomination of individuals to serve on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board. The window for nominations opened on 13 August 2024 and will close on Tuesday, 3 September 2024.

The NSFAS board consists of 18 members, 13 of whom must be appointed by the minister. A further four are co-opted by the board and the last one by the NSFAS CEO. They are appointed in terms of Section 5 (1)(a)(b) and (c) of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act.
NSFAS board members serve a four-year term. Their allowances will be in accordance with the National Treasury guidelines for remuneration.
Nominees must have a minimum qualification of a Master’s degree and a proven track record and experience in finance; law; ethics; economics; sciences (both social and natural sciences); public administration; governance; engineering or higher education – and who, by virtue of their qualifications, knowledge and experience, may be considered for appointment as members of the NSFAS board.
Nominations must be accompanied by the curriculum vitae of the nominee and a letter of consent indicating the availability of the nominee to serve on the NSFAS board if appointed.
The NSFAS is a statutory body established to allocate funds for loans and bursaries to eligible higher education students. The NSFAS develops criteria and conditions for the granting of loans and bursaries to eligible students, raises additional funds, recovers loans, maintains and analyses database and undertakes research for the better utilisation of financial resources. The NSFAS also advises the minister on matters relating to student financial aid and performs other functions assigned to it by the minister.
