Join us for the launch of our research report into mining for sustainable development
Corruption Watch is one of 20 Transparency International (TI) chapters participating in a new programme that aims to improve transparency and accountability in the extractive industries. The TI Mining for Sustainable Development programme focuses specifically on the start of the mining decision chain, when governments grant and award mining permits and licenses.
Corruption Watch undertook this project to raise public awareness of vulnerabilities in the mining application process, so as to mobilise public opinion and encourage good practice in mining activities. The ultimate beneficiaries will be the communities in which mining companies operate.
Mining impacts the growth and stability of the national economy; corruption in the mining application process hinders investment opportunities and affects everyone from large mining multi-nationals to the average person buying a loaf of bread. The focus of this report on mining rights, prospecting rights and environmental authorisations is of significance to multiple stakeholder groups impacted by mining.
