The state capture commission wants those involved in the “sham” that was the Free State asbestos eradication project in 2014 to face criminal investigations and potential prosecution. Commission chairperson Chief Justice Raymond Zondo concludes in the latest edition of his report – released last Friday – that the project was concocted with the sole purpose of defrauding the provincial government.

Chairperson of the state capture commission, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, wants most of the board of directors appointed at Eskom in December 2014 to be investigated and potentially prosecuted for what he says was their part in the capture of the power utility by the Guptas. The same should happen to former public enterprises minister Lynne Brown for her role in the board’s appointment and later interference in Eskom’s operations.

The state capture commission chairperson, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, wants former National Department of Human Settlements director-general Thabani Zulu to face corruption charges for his receipt of R600 000 in the form of a deposit for a vehicle from businessman Edwin Sodi in 2015. This is recommended in the commission’s latest report looking into the Free State asbestos eradication project that is currently the subject of a criminal trial. He has referred to the project as a “debacle” that should never be repeated.

The Free State housing “debacle” of 2010, as it has been described by the state capture commission, is the result of poor monitoring of government projects by elected political leaders, and an indictment on the ANC for failing to monitor and hold their elected leadership accountable.

Despite the numerous rebuttals from those involved in the pre-payment scheme allegedly favouring Gupta-owned Tegeta Resources’ acquisition of Optimum Coal Mine (OCM) from Glencore in 2015 and 2016, the state capture commission has found that they indeed constituted capture of the power utility.
