JHB public safety MMC acts on JMPD corruption

The City of Johannesburg Public Safety Department applause the Johannesburg Metro Police Department's (JMPD) Internal Affairs Unit for conducting a swift arrest of a JMPD officer who allegedly solicited a R1000 bribe from a motorist.

On Tuesday 24 April 2012, an employee from the Zimbabwe Government lodged a formal complaint with the JMPD Internal Affairs Unit, that a female officer took R 1000 from him and failed to provide him with a machine printed receipt, but instead he was given a hand written notice.

The corrupt officer did not issue a traffic fine for an expired license disc but took the money from the complainant after threatening to have him arrested.

The complainant positively identified the officer amongst a group of other officers and the suspect was arrested on the sport by our Internal Affairs Unit.

The Internal Affairs Unit arrested the officer and she currently detained at the Hillbrow Police Station for charges of bribery and corruption.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety in Joburg Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe reiterated that the City of Johannesburg and her department in particular is serious in rooting out corruption and misconduct of employees in the department and to ensuring that clean governance takes place.

MMC has asked the public to report corruption and they should avoid paying bribes to officers as they would be arrested and charged for bribe and corruption.

In due course the office of the MMC will release a dedicated cellphone number and an email address to the public to report misconduct and corruption of metro police officers and Joburg emergency management services.

This intervention will not overshadow the current existing crime line but it will help the public to report crime instantly as to enable her office to directly deal with such complains and provide answers and solutions.
