Media Invitation: Briefing by Civil Society organisations supporting the Unite Against Corruption marches
Civil society organisations endorsing the Unite Against Corruption marches on 30 September in Pretoria and Cape Town invite media to a briefing on Tuesday 22 September that will highlight the extent to which corruption affects the work of civil society, and the reasons for participating in these marches to register the broad dissent against those involved in corrupt practices.
Organisations including SECTION27, Corruption Watch, Equal Education, Right2Know, Amnesty International, Awethu! and others will focus on how ordinary people are affected as a result of corruption. This stems from denial of access to housing, health care, information and to basic human rights, and the impact this has on communities across the length and breadth of our country.
A set of demands has been drawn up by the coalition and will be presented to leaders at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and Parliament in Cape Town on 30 September. Other cities and communities across South Africa will be hosting similar events, including in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
Speakers include Mark Heywood (SECTION27), David Lewis (Corruption Watch), Godfrey Phiri (Right2Know), Zandile Ngubeni (Equal Education), Mbali Khumalo (Students for Law and Social Justice),and Pastor Simon Lerefolo (South African Christian Leadership Initiative).

Unite Against Corruption is a broad consortium of organisations and individuals from academia, civil society, faith-based organisations, the private sector and trade unions. The consortium presents an opportunity to bring together, in a spirit of unity, all those people who view corruption as an assault on our Constitution’s promise of equality and dignity. It is an initiative free of association with particular individuals or political parties.
