Corruption Watch (CW) will embark on a four-day series of community engagements in Mpumalanga from Tuesday 4 – Friday 7 October 2022, with a focus on how mining operations affect various communities in the province.

These engagements fall under the European Union Rallying Efforts to Accelerate Progress project (EU REAP), of which CW is the lead in South Africa. The focus of CW’s EU REAP interventions is on the creation of platforms for land right holders in mine-affected areas, so they may actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their land, property, environment and livelihoods. This includes research, advocacy and public outreach initiatives throughout the project’s life.

For meaningful change to occur in these sectors, and for communities and groups to be able to make significant contributions, they need opportunities for engagement. Thus, key issues are the strategies and means that need to be adopted to combat these problems.

These events aim to attract community members in large numbers to make sure that their voices are heard and that they are active participants in CW’s engagements with the council, local municipality, and the mining companies involved.

The engagements will take place as follows:

Dates: 4-7 October 2022

Time: 10h00

Venue: Various communities in Mpumalanga:

  • Tuesday: Carolina
  • Wednesday: Phola
  • Thursday: Emalahleni
  • Friday: Vosman
