On Friday, 22 February, Corruption Watch made a submission to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police (PCP) on the process to determine the renewal of the contract of the executive director of the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID).

The submission relates to Corruption Watch’s involvement as amicus curiae in the legal matter of Robert McBride and another v Minister of Police and another Case No. 6175/2019. The organisation’s interest is in light of the important constitutional issues that this matter raises, and is focused on the independence and effective functioning of oversight bodies such as IPID, and other institutions in the criminal justice sector.

PCP chairperson Francois Beukman referred to the Corruption Watch submission as “well crafted”, and pointed to two specific inputs relating to the role of the portfolio committee and its members in determining the renewal of the contract.
