Corruption Watch (CW) will release its 13th annual corruption report, titled Accountable together, on Thursday 27 March 2025.
This year’s report represents a critical moment in South Africa’s democratic history, after the advent of the significant political shift predicted in CW’s 2023 annual report, Changing the Landscape. The government of national unity (GNU) is the result of voters expressing their disappointment with the status quo, requiring the entire country to work together so that all can thrive.
Accountability has informed CW’s work since its inception, and it is now incumbent on everyone to demand accountability from the GNU on all levels of government, and equally, to hold each other accountable for our response to corruption.
Thus, the theme of this report demonstrates CW’s ongoing advocacy for accountability – one of the basic principles of democracy, along with transparency, rule of law, public participation, equality, free and fair elections, and socio-economic rights, among others. Accountability must begin with ourselves and extend to every level of society, business, and government.
The report highlights CW’s wide range of focus areas during 2024 that emphasise the impact of corruption on people’s lives. These include the organisation’s advocacy for enhanced accountability and transparency in the public sector, represented by its work to strengthen transparency in public procurement systems, the appointment processes of leaders in key public institutions, and interventions to improve anti-corruption legislation.
Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index highlights the urgent need for progress in the fight against corruption in South Africa. The allegations of corruption we receive point to the prevalence of corruption at the local government level, evident in our crumbling streets and cities. The detrimental effects of corruption are also seen across other sectors of CW’s work, including land corruption- and mining-affected communities, among others.
