The board of Corruption Watch issued a statement today in response to comments made by the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) at the Cosatu Congress currently underway in Midrand. These comments purported to terminate Cosatu’s financial support for Corruption Watch and alleged that Corruption Watch’s activities ‘delegitimised’ the state.
The Corruption Watch board notes that apart from a seed grant received in 2011 to help set up Corruption Watch, there has been no subsequent financial support from Cosatu, and all funding sources are available for scrutiny on the website: www.corruptionwatch.org.za.
“The CW board finds it regrettable that Popcru should view efforts to engage the public in combatting corruption as contrary to the interests of the state. However, such statements will not deter us from continuing our work, which we consider to be important for the country and all who live in it,” said chairperson Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane.
